Question about a record
Question about a record
I am new to this site but I have always been a fan of The Big O. I went to his concerts in England when I lived there and used to belong to his fan club there in Essex.
I have a 45 of his called Southbound Jerico Parkway and I cannot find out anything about it or anyone that has it or even heard of it. Can anyone throw any light on this please?
Thanks
Myra

Hi Myra welcome to the forum its a bit quiet on here at present a lot of the fans are making their way to Hendersonville to celebrate ROYS birthday on the 23 april Lucky people
Southbound Jericho Parkway i think its a great song and ROY sings it so well its very diffrent isnt it i have the single also it was never a big hit but i should imagine most ROYfans will have it in their collection
I also like Comunication Breakdown another song that is diffrent but didnt do very well
I live in England and was in the fan club in Essex run by Margaret Finch did you go to any get togethers to meet ROY while he was touring in England i was lucky to meet ROY three times
Nice to talk to you. Im sure someone will be able to tell you more about S/J/P than i can when they are back from the celebrations Where are you living now ? Pauline
Hello Myra,
I was a member of the UK fan club run from Essex as well, been a fan since Only The Lonely. Southbound Jerico Parkway was the B side of My Friend. It was quite a change to Roy's other recordings as it was so long, and had several changes to tempo during the song. It has not appeared on too many CDs over the years either, a somewhat undervalued recording.

Wasn't done for a movie?? I remember a fan talking about some years back
Hi,
Southbound Jericho Parkway doesn't appear on many reissues, nor was it available on any of Roy's original albums, so it is a bit of a forgotten song. The only album i can think of that includes it is "The Singles Collection 1965 - 73" (Polydor). I'm guessing that, because this was included on that album, it must have been the A side of the single in the USA, while the UK chose the other side "My Friend". I've never heard that it was written for a movie, but it does seem quite possible as Roy was quite involved in movie songs around this time (Zig Zag, So Young etc), so maybe this was one that got rejected.

Hi,
SJP was released as a single way back in 1969 and was written for Roy by Billy Bond.
When it was released the radiostations wouldnt play it because of its length.
Decca then made the b-side My friend the a-side.
it was a very small hit for Roy in the UK only

I just knew you would be able to put us all right on that question ABS thanks
Yes, just like Ab says, the radiostations found the song too long for airplay and picked the b side My friend. Originally it lasted til the part : "and drove himself into a wall" but Roy wasn't too happy with the song like that.
Than Bobby Bond added the later part that gave it it's amazing 7 minutes length!..

I really like Southbound Jericho Parkway. I just found the CD Singles Collections made of recordings of Roy in the late 1960s and early 70s. I like the songs a lot. Sounthbound Jericho Parkway may be one of my favorite
